My subscription is getting more expensive. Is that allowed?
Not just like that. It has to be in the terms beforehand, and the company has to tell you in time. Can't you cancel then? Then the price increase is almost always not fair.
How it works
A company can’t just raise the price. It has to be in the terms beforehand, and it has to tell you in time. For phone, internet and TV you can often cancel for free when the price goes up. But only within a short time after the message.
The tricky part
Your right to cancel depends on one email. Miss it, or react too late? Then you simply pay the new amount. And that happens with more and more subscriptions.
The message arrives in an email with the subject 'Change to your terms'. In between the newsletters. You don't read it. Three months later you only spot it on your bank statement, and your chance to cancel is gone.
Often asked
Can my subscription get more expensive because of inflation?
Sometimes, if that was clearly stated in the terms beforehand.
What if taxes go up?
Then the price may go up too, because the company doesn't choose that itself.
Why does so much get more expensive around 1 January?
Many companies adjust their prices at the start of the year. In December and January, watch extra carefully for emails with 'new rates' or 'change' in the subject.
