Something broke. Do I get a new one?

In short

Often you do. What you buy has to last as long as you can normally expect. That's called the legal warranty, and it still applies when the manufacturer's warranty has ended.

How it works

There are two kinds of warranty. The manufacturer’s warranty is an extra, often 2 years. The legal warranty you always have, and it can last much longer. For an expensive TV or fridge, sometimes 6 to 10 years.

Does something break in the first year? Then the shop has to prove that you broke it. After that it gets harder.

The tricky part

Having the right is one thing. Showing it is another. For that you need the receipt and the purchase date, often years later.

Oeps, this is where it goes wrong

Your washing machine stops after 3 years. Where did you buy it again? And when? The receipt is long gone. Without proof you're in a weak position, even if you're right.

Often asked

Is warranty always 2 years?

No. Many people think so, but Dutch law doesn't set a fixed number of years. An expensive washing machine has to last much longer than a cheap charger.

Do I have to go to the manufacturer?

No. The shop where you bought it has to sort it out.
