The gift doesn't fit. Can it still go back?
Bought online? Then the return time starts the day the parcel reached the buyer. Not at Sinterklaas or Christmas. In a regular shop, exchanging is only possible if the shop offers it.
How it works
A gift bought online falls under the buyer’s cooling-off period. That’s at least 14 days, and the clock starts when the parcel reaches the buyer. Many shops give more time, like 30 days. Check the return periods per shop.
Did a gift arrive on 2 December, from a shop with 30 days? Then the last day is around 1 January. While you’re still eating oliebollen.
Was the gift bought in a regular shop? Then there’s no cooling-off period. Exchanging is only possible if the shop offers it, and almost always with the receipt.
The tricky part
The buyer and the receiver are two people. The receiver notices it doesn’t fit. But only the buyer can send it back, through their own account. And they forgot the date long ago.
The gift has been wrapped in the cupboard since early December. On 5 January you want to exchange it. The last return day was yesterday.
Often asked
Can I exchange a gift in a shop without a receipt?
That's up to the shop. A shop doesn't have to exchange, and without a receipt they often say no. A bank statement from the buyer can sometimes help.
Do I get money back or a store voucher?
Bought online and sent back within the cooling-off period? Then the buyer gets their money back. In a regular shop, the shop may give only a store voucher.
Do shops extend their return period in December?
Some do. It differs per shop and per year. Check the shop's website, or our return periods per shop.
